Shared accountability
Bets are one of the few networked features, and they stay opt-in.
Note: Social Bets is turned off in the v1.0 release while its cloud sync finishes a final round of testing. It returns in a near-term update. Everything below describes how it works once enabled.
What it is
A bet is a friendly contest between friends. There is no social network here. You get no profiles, no follower counts, and no feed. It is just a private race between people who already know each other.
How it works
- Make a bet: pick a type and a target
- Share it by link or QR code
- Friends join with no signup and no email
- Kinoku tracks it from your workouts
- The board updates as you train
- The bet ends on the date you set
Three bet types
Workout count: the first to log a set number of workouts wins. Good for staying on track.
Streak: the longest run of logged days before the deadline wins. Tough but fun.
Tonnage: the most total weight lifted wins. Weight is always counted in kilos so the contest is fair across units.
The privacy story
The shared board runs on Firebase, a Google cloud service. It is the only part of Kinoku that goes online. Even then, it stays anonymous. No email, no phone number, and no personal data goes with you. The board only holds your display name and your progress. When the bet ends, that data clears out.
You choose to join each bet. If you never join one, no Kinoku data ever leaves your phone.
